Type of Studies
Baseline Polysomnography
A baseline is a sleep study recording with no therapy.  Over 20 electrodes and sensors are placed on the body.  Therapy is not provided during this study it is for diagnostic purposes only.  Depending on the results of this test a second night with therapy may be required.  This is used to evaluate a persons sleep for an entire night.

CPAP Therapy
CPAP is the commonly used treatment for sleep apnea.  This therapy delivers a small amount of air pressure through a mask while you sleep.  This pressurized air prevents your airway from collapsing so that air can flow freely to and from your lungs.  CPAP is the most commonly prescribed treatment for sleep apnea in adults.  Most people experience immediate relief of symptoms. 
This is an entire night with the CPAP therapy as well as all of the diagnostic electrodes.

Split Night
This sleep study is used on special occasions.  It not the preferred method for diagnosing and treating sleep apnea because it is a shorter diagnostic and therapy study.  Patient compliance is low when this study is used.  It only allows for three to four hours of therapy.

MSLT
The Multiple Sleep latency test is used to test for Narcolepsy.  Four test are performed every two hours in the morning after a baseline study.

MWT
Multiple wakefulness Test is performed when people are at excessively sleepy.  For instance a truck driver that falls asleep at the wheel may have to do this test if he is in danger of sleeping at the wheel.  Four short studies are required to make sure that the patient is able to maintain wakefulness throughout the day.
